IRONING GUIDE

While it’s never a popular occupation, ironing can be easier! This guide shows you how to efficiently achieve a perfect finish every time.

Preparation

Ideally, iron your shirt when damp, or lightly dampen all over using a mist water spray.

Collar

-          Iron the underside of the collar from the outside edge to the centre and repeat on the other side. This avoids forming creases at the points.

-          To prevent the collar points curling over, turn the collar over while still damp and warm, and pull each collar point straight, using your thumb and forefinger.

-          Repeat on the topside.

-          Finally, fold the collar along the neckband seam and iron to create a definite fold.

Cuffs

-          Iron the underside from the outside edge to the centre and repeat this process on the right side.

-          For double cuff shirts, fold the cuff in half, line up the cufflink holes and press a firm crease along the fold.

Split Yoke and Box Pleat

-          Iron one half of the yoke at a time, laying them separately over the end of the ironing board.

-          Smooth out the fabric to eliminate creases.

-          Use the point of the iron to work from the sleeve towards the join at the centre of the yoke.

-          Swing the shirt around and repeat on the other side.

Sleeves

-          Place one sleeve on the ironing board with the buttons facing up.

-          Smooth out the sleeve fabric, taking into consideration the two pleats underneath.

-          Iron from the underarm seam towards the top edge of the sleeve, forming a crease along the top edge.

-          Tease out the fabric at the cuff as you carefully push the point of the iron into the pleats and gathers.

-          Turn the sleeve over and repeat.

Back

-          Lay the back of the shirt body over the ironing board with the collar at the broad end of the board.

-          Iron from the tail to the yoke, spraying with water mist if necessary.

Front

-          Iron around the seams first.

-          Move the shirt around the board so that you cover every area.

-          Iron between each of the buttons.

-          Repeat on the other side.

-          Run the iron along the button-hole front, from the tail up to the collar.

NOTE: Creases return quite easily when the fabric is warm and damp. When ironing large areas, such as the back and front, make sure each section is as cool and dry as possible before moving on to the next.
