WHO WE ARE

Baubridge & Kay was founded in 1989 by creative directors Philip & Julie Chapman who develop the collections inspired by their heritage, travels and lifestyle.

The label started with men's shirts and ties and has expanded over the years to include men's suiting, women's wear and a luxurious soft furnishing collection.

Long established relationships with European fabric mills ensure a continued quality and consistency in product design and quality.

Baubridge & Kay collections are available from selected David Jones stores nationally and a growing number of retailers in both Australia & New Zealand.

Additionally an elegant new online shop will be coming soon.

STYLE TIPS

Managing Director, Philip Chapman's top 10 style tips for the male corporate world.

1. Don’t ever wear grey shoes or white socks with a suit. Actually don’t ever wear grey shoes – period.

2. There should be a “dimple” under your tie knot. It’s the mark of a gentleman.

4.Ties with big cartoon characters on them like Mickey Mouse tell everyone you’re a bit – well Mickey Mouse, really.

5. If your shirt’s sleeves are too long, get them altered. If they are too short get a new shirt.

6. Don’t be afraid of colour in your shirts or ties, but be respectful of the business environment that you are in or the occasion you are going to.

7. Shirt designs can help your appearance in relation to your figure. If you are tall and slim then check designs will help you look more solid and lessen your height. If you are shorter, then stripes will make you look taller and slimmer.

8. If you’re worried about the new season’s colours and can’t see yourself in the latest mint green shirt, then look to tone things down with a splash of the latest must have colours in a tie or pair of cufflinks. You can then remain confident in your attire but show you are up with the latest trends.

9. Don’t ever get your “colours” done by a colour consultant. Every client I have ever spoken to after this has been more confused than before. Wear what you like and feel confident in.

10. Don’t ever wear a regimental or armed forces tie if you aren’t entitled to wear it. It’s disrespectful and plain bad manners. (I know some of these designs are the best, but there it is.)

THE PERFECT SHIRT

ITALIAN COTTON

The high quality of Baubridge & Kay’s fabric is achieved through a mixture of tradition and technology. The company works with its Italian mill suppliers to maximise potential and to utilise the most advanced production systems.

The preferred weave of Baubridge & Kay is two-fold, which features strongly in its shirt collections.

Two-fold cotton is made using a process in which each thread in the weave is made from two individual strands, which are twisted together or “folded” to give extra strength without added bulk. The result is a superfine cloth with a luxurious and silky feel.

It is also valued for its improved fabric regularity and the fact that it is flexible enough for its special effects to be included in its weaving.

THE PERFECT FINISH
THE PERFECT KNOT

FOUR-IN-HAND

This is currently the most popular knot. Its name is derived from 18th Century coach-and-four horse drivers who tied their neckwear this way. It is perfect for cutaway collars and its elongated funnel complements a single-breasted suit.

Place the tie around your neck. The tie’s wide end should be about 30cm
(a standard length ruler) below the narrow end. Cross the wide end over
the front of the narrow end and bring it back underneath.
Cross the wide end again
over the the front of the narrow end.
Bring the wide
end up through the back of the loop and pass it down through the knot in front.
Tighten the knot
by holding the narrow end and sliding the knot up towards the collar.

Half Windsor

This knot should be pulled taught and positioned as high in the collar space as possible. Do the two finger test at the collar to confirm all-day comfort.

Place the tie around your neck. The tie’s wide end should be about 30cm (a standard length ruler)
below the narrow end. Cross it over the narrow end and bring it back underneath.
Take the wide end and wind it once through the loop, from front to back.
Pass the wide end of the tie across the front of the knot and bring it through the loop again.
Pass it down through the front of the knot.
Slowly tighten the knot by holding the narrow end and sliding the knot up towards the collar.

Bow Tie

Bow ties worn with wing collars should be tied by hand. Remember to thread it through the tie-retainer loop at the back of the neck to stop it from riding up. The knot is actually the same as a shoelace bow, though achieving a neat appearance does take practice.

Place the tie around your neck. One end should be nearly 4cm below the other.
Cross the two ends and bring the long end along the front, and then bring it up-and-under from
behind to from the beginning of a knot.
Form a loop with the short end and centre it where the knot will be. This bow forms the front of
the bow tie.
Bring the long end over the centre of the knot. Form a loop with the long end and push it through
the knot behind the front loop. This loop forms the back of the bow tie.
Tighten the knot gently. Adjust the bows for symmetry and fully tighten the knot by pulling firmly
on the loops.
